Animation is a glorious subject and prone to many varied misconceptions. So I thought I'd add some of my own into the mix. This is a work in progress- a hybrid mix of shameless self advertising and industry related mumblings. I hope you enjoy your visit and don't fall off the edge of the sanity platform It's a looong way down Cheers, Mr.
Not only did they create the crust punk genre although don't tell them that , they also had a huge influence on the fledgling extreme metal movement, being an influence to essential bands such as Bathory. This documentary provided the spark for their reunion - which actually ended up being one of the most fruitful reunions of a classic band ever.
While Risen is a bit amateurish and glosses over things I am dying to know more about, it was nonetheless enthralling to learn more about one of my favourite bands. The one thing that kind of bothered me about the first third of the movie is Rob reading from his journal. Don't get me wrong, Rob is one of the coolest dudes in punk and metal, but it just came off as kind of weird and didn't really fit the flow of the documentary. I think these could have made a great blog, though. However, learning about the early years was still very interesting, especially their experiences squatting.
Through the band's account both Rob and Stig as well as past members as well as others involved somehow or other, the viewer is taken on a journey to drug-laden squalid squats brimming with criminal activity. It's very interesting how at first these spawned very potent creativity but then drugs ended up ruining everything it's like that QOTSA song about drugs' effect on creativity - first it giveth, then it taketh away.
In the end, this sort of life was not for Rob, and after a bad relationship and a motorcycle accident he moved to the Isle of Skye and ended up making swords, which is every bit as badass as being the frontman of Amebix. As for the music, there's a lot of stuff on the early work and then a shitload on their landmark debut album, Arise!
