The horse whisperer ebook

As I said, the main story should have been Grace and Pilgrim. I also disagree with the author's implication that cheating is sort of okay, under the right circumstances. Once Tom learned that Annie was married, that should have been the end of it. I also expected Tom to have more magic than he did.

He turned out to be just a guy who's really good at dealing with horses. I'm not sure if I would recommend this book, or to whom I would recommend it. Some parts of the story are very good, showing the fragility of human relations. Some parts are heartwarming. You want to join these folks at their barbecues and cattle drives. But the forced romance nearly ruins those warm feelings. Also, as a warning to anyone who cares about horses - this novel can be very intense where horses are concerned.

May be traumatizing to some. Mar 08, Fred Shaw rated it it was amazing. I don't like to see bad things happen to people or animals. Although I cringe when I think of an animal that has been hurt, I like to see it restored. The author tells a story of a young girl and her girlfriend on an early winter morning ride where tragedy strikes. Lives were lost. However some lived but with incredible injuries. The setting is beautiful Montana. View 1 comment. Jan 15, Katy M rated it really liked it.

Pop sugar Reading Challenge A book that makes you nostalgic. This book would get a 5, but for the ending. Which I don't hate as much as some. This is a wonderfully descriptive book. I absolutely hate Annie and Diane I'm still trying to figure out if there names being so similar is on purpose, but I'm no good at that kind of stuff , but still manage to love the book as a whole.

Grace and Pilgrim's journeys of healing are so inspirational and touching. I won this book when I went to see the movie adaptation, which was great. So I read the book after I watched the movie. It was great, albeit a bit sadder than the movie and with a different ending, if I remember correctly. That was back in or I ate this book.

It was assume. Loved the movie too! Adultery is not romantic. Will men quit writing this shit! Jun 01, Erin rated it really liked it Shelves: fiction. So for a long time I associated this book with the movie, assuming I would be no more interested in its story than I would a Redford film. I was wrong. This is perhaps one of the most beautiful books I've ever read.

Nicholas Evans balances life's extremes perfectly in his less-than-perfect characters, and gives such vivid accounts of America's western frontier that it make me want to saddle up and ride to the other side of the Mississippi.

Young Grace Maclean and her steed, Pilgrim, are involved in an accident that leaves both horse and rider mentally and physically scarred. What follows is the gentle recovery of more than just those immediately involved in the accident -- Grace's parents, Annie and Robert, also undergo a healing process. But Tom Booker, whose kind understanding of both horses and humans helps to mend the Maclean family's wounded relationships, finds himself in a difficult position.

He and Annie are overcome by an undeniable attraction, and though their affair takes away from the healing focus of the story, I think it's appropriate for Evans to show that life goes on despite us and that new scraps and bruises are acquired, even as we lick our wounds.

Jan 03, Maciek rated it it was ok Shelves: owned-books , own-in-paperback , read-in , reviewed. A friend of mine kept bugging me to read Nicholas Evans, and I finally gave in and got his first novel - The Horse Whisperer. It was made into a movie with the everbeautiful Scarlett Johansonn which I saw years ago and enjoyed, though it didn't leave any lasting impression.

When it came to the book I wasn't impressed. With an interesting premise - girl coming back to health after an accident during horse riding, a "whisperer" called to heal the horse - it soon became cliched and predictable. The interesting process with the girl coming back to health after the accident, and the dreamy cowboy is trying to heal the horse and make it trust people again was soon switched by Evans for a corny Hollywood romance.

The story moves to focus on the girl's unlikable mother, who is said to love her husband dearly, but for some reason just has to hump the dreamy cowboy who soon realizes that the lady is hot for him and he's hot for her. There's little here that wasn't done before and it is not done in any spectacular way. The ending to the story is so bizarrely ridiculous that I wouldn't really recommend this novel to anyone. Spoiler alert! First of all, the beginning was reminiscent of A Time to Kill to me. Obviously, it's different, but to have an opener be so violent and horrifying is upsetting. It's interesting to me that I don't even like animals, but horrible things happening to them has always upset me. Secondly, I'm still confused about why the "traditional romance novel crap" was thrown into what was otherwise a pretty well-written book.

The author certainl Spoiler alert! The author certainly could have told us that Annie and Tom had sex without describing it in graphic detail. I just didn't understand it. I've read my share of romance novels, but the descriptions and that includes all the sex descriptions were so out of place and unnecessary that it took away from the story.

Makes me think of when my husband watches a musical under duress -- just as he's getting into the story, they break into song! This interrupts the flow of the story for him.

In the same way, the author threw those descriptions in as if he'd just lifted them from a romance novel. I didn't buy it nor like it. From a "novel" perspective, this was a great story. Well told, mostly believable, plenty of "technical" talk about the subject but not too much to lose the interest of a non-technical reader, descriptions clear enough that you could see things happening or picture the Montana sky.

The story of the health of the horse being vital to the emotional health of Grace was a great allegory analogy? The author certainly did a bit of armchair psychology; talking about Annie's relationship with her parents, Grace's perspective on Annie's job, etc.

But for the most part, these helped tell the story and explain the motivations of the characters. The overuse of the word "alright" for some reason really irritated me. It seemed to be all over this book! I really felt sorry for the dad Robert. Not so much because of Annie's affair, but because he's such a genuinely nice guy who tries so hard, and he's really brushed aside for sake of the story. I appreciated his relationship with Grace more than many of the other relationships, and would have liked to have heard more about it.

Clearly in Grace's life, that relationship was more meaningful, but I guess that wouldn't have followed the story as well. Or the book would have been longer. All that to say, I liked it, except for the end. I thought it was very unbelievable and actually kind of dumb. Like the author didn't know how to get out of the story. Did killing Tom off make it easier for Annie to stay with Robert? It just seemed kind of weak compared with the rest of the book. And the events leading up to it were just as contrived.

The character we came to know as Grace wouldn't really have thought about burning herself in the cabin. Been upset, sure. Ridden Pilgrim in an out-of-control way? But she wasn't suicidal. It seemed like that was the best the author could come up with in order to have Pilgrim have an encounter with the wild stallion.

And believe me, we didn't see that coming she said, sarcastically. I think there were probably other ways Pilgrim could have gotten up there with the wild horses without Grace becoming suicidal. Dec 15, Talea rated it it was amazing Shelves: drama , romance , women , animals , western.

This is one of those books that has become a part of who I am. I was not prepared for the romantic relationship between Annie and Tom. It was healing. Part of me knows that a book that evokes this much emotion with characters that feel like family it should be 5. The other part is still bitter about the romance and is screaming it would have been just fine This is one of those books that has become a part of who I am. The other part is still bitter about the romance and is screaming it would have been just fine leaving the romance out and keeping it about a family and healing instead of muddying the waters.

I only put it down when it hit nerves. If you've already seen the movie, be prepared that the book is totally different, although much, much better.

I liked the ending of the book more than the movie, although most people probably wouldn't.
